A short 20 minute ride via water taxi from nearby Shute Harbour will deliver you to a tropical island paradise that you might mistake for an exotic overseas location. The palm tree lined golden sandy beaches greet you as you begin your adventure on Long Island.
Long Island is a relatively small island only 9 kilometres long and is predominantly a national park with 13 kilometres of walking trails waiting to be explored. There is one resort remaining on the island with previous accommodation deciding to close, however, there is discussions of a new resort opening in the future.
Long Island is best suited to visitors who are looking for a relaxing escape in a natural setting. Home to the Palm Bay Resort, guests can choose from 23 villas, suites, bures, bungalows and ocean view houses nestled into the surroundings of the island.
The resort offers comfortable and luxurious accommodation in a stunning setting but is low key and understated. Instead of pricey resort restaurant meals, the entire resort is self- catering. Everyone must bring their own meals which can be prepared in their rooms or in the community food preparation areas that host BBQ’s, ovens, fridges and freezers. Supplies can also be purchased from the convenience store in the resort. The resort does have a bar onsite to serve up your favourite cocktails whilst on holiday.
Having a self- catering option makes this island stay a more affordable and accessible choice for families and couples that are on a strict budget but still want to have that tropical island experience in the Whitsundays.
Most of the activities on Long Island are land based, with offshore snorkelling available in the island’s surrounding fringing reef roughly 150 metres from the shoreline. Other activities include bushwalking, kayaking, fishing, a day spa, swimming pools, relaxing in a hammock and more.
Day trips to other islands or the outer Great Barrier Reef can be organised such as: snorkelling and diving excursions, fishing charters, water sports and helicopter and sea plane flights.
This island is about escaping from the grind. You will find no televisions, telephones or WIFI in the rooms. This is a holiday that allows you to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings; the secluded beaches, peaceful bush walks and each other’s company. Bring your own food and alcohol and relax in comfortable accommodation on an island in the middle of the Whitsundays.
Take advantage on the tropical setting and relax and read a book under the shade of a palm tree, take a leisurely snorkel, or simply plug in your headphones and relax in the sun – that’s what a trip to Long Island is all about.
